Some Organizing Principles for a Unified Top-Level Ontology

چکیده

objects are objects which do not have a spatial nor a temporal location. They are included here just for completeness, but are in fact kept outside the current analysis. Notice however that I refer here to abstract particulars, such as Pitagora’s theorem or (maybe?) the empty set. Most entities usually called abstract objects are however universals (see section 5). Qualities are included here among particulars. I endorse here the position of those philosophers who – following Husserl – admit the ontological existence of “individual qualities” [Mulligan et al. 1984]. Therefore the color of a particular rose, the height of a particular mountain, the length of my nose are all unique individuals, unlike properties like “being red”

Semantic Matching: Formal Ontological Distinctions for Information Organization, Extraction, and Integration

The task of information extraction can be seen as a problem of semantic matching between a user-defined template and a piece of information written in natural language. To this purpose, the ontological assumptions of the template need to be suitably specified, and compared with the ontological implications of the text. So-called “ontologies”, consisting of theories of various kinds expressing t...

Chapter 8: Categories: The Top-Level Ontology

The task of ontology is to represent reality or, rather, to support the sciences in their representation of reality. In the last chapter, the reader became acquainted with an important means of doing so, namely: the technique of classification. But, in any classification, what are the very first kinds? What should the top level look like? In this chapter, I attempt to answer these questions. Fi...

?Logic and Formal Ontology: Is the Final Formal Ontology Possible

Musa Akrami AbstractMany philosophers and logicians have contemplated the relationship between ontology and logic. The author of this paper, working within a Bolzanoan-Husserlian tradition of studying both ontology and logic, considers ontology as the science of the most general features of beings and the most general relations among them. He considers logic as the science concernin...

What is an Upper Level Ontology ? Wolfgang Degen

In the present paper we make some contributions to the theory of upper level categories. Every domain-speciic ontology must use as a framework some upper-level ontology which describes the most general, domain-independent categories of reality. It turns out that the top-level ontology of the well-known standard modelling languages KIF (Knowledge Interchange Format), F-logic (Frame-Logic), and C...

The Unified Medical Language System and the Gene Ontology: Some Critical Reflections

The Unified Medical Language System and the Gene Ontology are among the most widely used terminology resources in the biomedical domain. However, when we evaluate them in the light of simple principles for wellconstructed ontologies we find a number of characteristic inadequacies. Employing the theory of granular partitions, a new approach to the understanding of ontologies and of the relations...
